Dr Caroline Day reports on the hybrid meeting hosted at the San Diego Convention Center, 23-26 June, 2023
Combined in-person and online participation at the 83rd Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association was >12,000. However, this is about 25% lower than when the meeting was last held at this popular San Diego waterfront venue in 2017, and attendance was 20% below that at the last pre-pandemic meeting (San Francisco in 2019). Of necessity the 2020 meeting transitioned to online only, and the number of participants at the 80th Scientific Sessions was similar to this year’s hybrid meeting.
Links to this year’s scientific sessions can be found on the ADA website. Access is offered to abstracts and posters, but webcasts are not yet available on this link.1 The scientific sessions webcasts are available ‘on demand’ to registered delegates (it’s never too late) – go to the Events tab.
To navigate the meeting the final programme can be downloaded as a flipbook from the ADA website.2 In addition to a range of symposia, mini-symposia, update sessions and industry-sponsored learning opportunities there are more than 1,600 posters to view (>280 late breakers) and more than 370 oral sessions to watch. To select material of potential interest the abstracts book can be accessed via the Diabetes Journal section of the ADA website. Since there are more than 2,000 abstracts (70 of them published only) it would be useful to have a pdf of the supplement on file.3
In addition to the award lectures (Table 1) there were plenty of presentations at this meeting which were considered highlight events. These can be viewed on the ADA website by accessing ADA Meeting News (Meeting News tab, which also links to videos, i.e. interviews on ADA TV).4 Medfyle Today (accessible via ADA Highlights link) also offers interesting daily coverage of the meeting if you are not a UK healthcare professional – change your VPN location to view.5
Book extra annual leave to include 21-24 June, 2024 and partake of some Florida fun. The ADA meeting will be at the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive – just a few minutes’ drive to Walt Disney World, Sea World and other Orlando attractions. Time to check out those charter flights.
